Dr. Alfred H. Saulnier, a native of Acushnet and author of “The French in New Bedford”, a Spinner publication, will focus on the history of Franco-American communities in New Bedford from the 1600s through the 1930s, highlighting their resilience and influence as the city transformed from a vibrant whaling port to a textile manufacturing center, despite facing challenges such as immigration restrictions and the Great Depression. The French speaking community played a crucial role in shaping the social and political landscape of the city and ultimately achieved greater representation and citizenship rights. Dr. Saulnier will have copies of his book available for purchase and signing.
